Major problems with C510!

Hi guys, sorry for the rather dramatic title but I'm having some quite big problems with this phone.

The phone was bought from Carphone Warehouse (on o2) about 6 months ago. It was fine until yesterday when it was struggling to send a text message even with full signal (message constantly failed to send). Then this morning, the time had dropped back around an hour overnight - making me late for work as I used it for my alarm. When I turned it on, I got the message "insert SIM card". When I refitted the SIM and turned back on, I had no network coverage at all, my phonebook could not be accessed and to top it all off it is on low battery and will not charge (cannot charge battery, please use a sony ericsson battery).

I have bought a temporary phone and the old o2 sim works fine in it although there are no contacts on the SIM (may have saved them to the phone) and a new o2 SIM does not work in the C510 (same problems).

I was told by Carphone warehouse to update using SEUS, however the battery is low and cannot be charged. Is it ok to do this and before I try this, is there any way to get the contacts back?
